This set of pictures is centred around my present passion for Architectural photography. I like all sorts of Architecture, but to give this set some uniformity, the pictures here, all concern churches. Most of the pictures come from my sprawling Romanesque project, that I will turn into a Blurb book, when I decide to finish the project.
I started taking pictures back in 1974, when I moved to London. My father gave me a Yashika rangefinder with a broken light meter, along with a Weston light meter and John Hedgecoe’s Book of Photography, to teach me what those strange numbers on the rotating disks meant. A lifelong passion was born.
My London photography was all about “street” as it is now called, in places like Brick Lane or Ladbrook Grove. In 1988, in a moment of madness, my Italian wife convinced me to move to Italy. Whilst I learnt Italian, I worked for a local news magazine. It was great fun. I returned to my real job as a Structural Engineer, but I also did performing arts photography for our provincial theatre part time for ten years.
My photography then changed radically towards landscape photography. I enjoy hiking in our Apennine mountains and a D70, D300 and then a EM5 were faithful companions on my exploration of these mountains.
A chance encounter with some strange column carvings, sparked an interest in Medieval Architecture, which has become my latest photographic obsession. I love the slow process of working with shift lenses.
